McDonald “Mac” Newkirk, 74, entered eternal rest, on Thursday, October 2,2025 at his home after a long illness in Durham, NC. He was predeceased by his wife Osceola (Shields) Newkirk. They enjoyed 25 years of marriage.
Mac was born in Spring Hope, North Carolina to the late Lillie Belle and Walter Newkirk. He graduated from Boston Trade High School in 1970 with a major in Machine Shop. Continuing with that trade, he worked at Gillette Razor Co. in Boston from 1970-1984. He attended Benjamin Franklin Institute in 1971 where he majored in Mechanical Drafting and Machine Shop. Mac and his family relocated in 1984 to Durham, NC, where he resided until his death.
Mac was an avid fan of old westerns. He was member of the Ed Wyatt Chapter of the Western Preservation Society, Inc. in Raleigh. The group of western fans met monthly to watch and discuss the old B-Westerns and other productions. He also met some of the old western stars.
He enjoyed listening to and recording old school music. Mac knew many songs from back in the day that some people had forgotten about. He also enjoyed sports. He was a “Carolina” man, especially when it came to basketball.
Mac had an unbelievable memory. He never forgot your name. Also, he could recall many events that involved family, friends, and fellow co-workers. He attended Victory Cathedral Worship Center under the leaderships of his cousins, Apostle Marion Davis-Patterson and Apostle Mario L. Davis, and was later ordained an Elder in the Lord’s church.
He is survived by his daughter, Regina (Newkirk) Holloway; his four grandchildren, Jeremiah Newkirk, Elisa, Whitney and Robert Holloway of Durham NC; sister Judy Newkirk, brothers, Philip Newkirk (Carol), and Stephen Newkirk of Boston MA, and a host of many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
