Rufus Edwards, affectionately known as “Uncle Poochie” was born on May 23,1943 to the late Curlin and Betty Edwards in Chapel Hill, N.C. He went home to be with the Lord on March 29, 2026 at PruittHealth of Durham, NC.

Rufus received his education from Chatham County Public School System and graduated from Horton High School in 1962.

Rufus was a member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, N.C.

Rufus retired from the Dietary Department at Duke Regional Hospital. He loved and enjoyed his family. He loved playing cards (Spades) at family gatherings. He also loved his nephew (John) coconut pies. Affectionately known as “Uncle Poochie,” he always looked forward to visits from his nephew Sherone, especially when he arrived with his favorite meal from Kentucky Fried Chicken.

Rufus was preceded in death by his parents, Curlin and Betty Edwards; his only son, Shawn Edwards; his twin sister, Ruth Edwards; his sister, Mary Price; and his brother, James Clifton Edwards. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Helen Edwards, and his special friend, Alice Faye Vanhook.

Rufus leaves to cherish his loving memories his two grandchildren; his brother, Theodore Edwards (Shirley) of Pittsboro, NC; his sister-in-law, Edna Titus of Durham, NC; his special niece and caregiver, Sharion Price; his first wife, Mildred Milliken; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
