Velverton Gaylord Land

December 27, 1935 — February 13, 2026

Durham

Velverton Gaylord Land, lovingly known as “Pop,” was born on December 27, 1935, and peacefully transitioned on February 13, 2026. His life was one richly woven with love, service, music, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to family and community.

Velverton was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Rosa Wooden and Percy Land; his stepfather, Hubert Wooden; his sisters, Lentula Land Thomas (Curtis) and Lena Jones (Wilford); nephew, Joseph Marion Gorham, and his cousins, Elton, Reginald and William Lewis “Junior” Coffield.

He leaves to cherish his extraordinary life and enduring legacy his devoted wife of 66 years, Marjorie Gorham Land. Their union was a testament to steadfast love, partnership, and faith. He was a proud and loving father to Velverton Craig Land and Gerald Anthony Land (Katie). He was also a cherished grandfather to Jessica, Jamison, Jacob and Harrison Land. His legacy continues through his beloved nieces—Renee Purvis (Tracy) and her daughter Ariel Purvis, Millicent Thomas, and Liza Donnell—and nephews Percy Thomas and Rendall Howell (Nancy) and their son Theo, Fredrick Gorham (Meagan) and Stanley Gorham. Also left to cherish his memory are cousins, Sandra Land, Barbara Coffield, Vaughn Coffield, Clara Coffield, Cynthia Coffield, Portia Sherrod along with a host of extended family and dear friends.

Velverton served his country honorably in the United States Air Force as an aircraft radio repairman, demonstrating the quiet diligence and skill that would characterize his life’s work. He attended North Carolina Central University, further grounding himself in education and community. For 35 years, he faithfully served at the UNC School of Public Health, where his professionalism and dedication left a lasting impact. Beyond his primary career, he also worked as a funeral home director and a professional photographer—roles that reflected his compassion for others and his eye for preserving life’s most meaningful moments.

Music was one of Velverton’s greatest joys. A gifted and passionate musician, he played the clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, harmonica, and piano. Marjorie wrote the school song for their high school and Velverton wrote the music. When his dexterity began to fade, he found simple, profound happiness sitting in the sun, harmonica in hand, still making music from the depths of his soul. He also found peace in gardening, nurturing life with the same patience and care he gave to his family.

Velverton never met a stranger. With a mischievous sense of humor and a discerning palate, he was known for offering a loving but honest critique—no matter who prepared the meal. He was a curator of memories and a treasured storyteller, preserving family history through vivid recollections and laughter-filled tales. His adventurous spirit extended from his travels to his table, always eager to try something new.

Velverton was a faithful member of First Baptist Church. His contributions as Trustee,

Usher, Sunday school assistant, Kitchen Ministry, and invisible handyman were examples of his faith and commitment to his community.

Velverton was a member of Enterprise Lodge #347 of Chapel Hill, where he served as secretary.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Rothchild/Brodsky Village, St Paul AME Church and First Baptist Church, Chapel Hill Internal Medicine, and Flying Squirrel Music, as well as dedicated care givers (Alphie Omondi, Elton Nyandoya, Mariarosa Ouma, Pat Neese, and Robert Mann) for their love, care, kindness, and support.

Velverton Gaylord Land lived fully and loved deeply. His was truly a life well lived—a melody that will continue to echo in the hearts of all who knew him.
