Thomas Leondus Merritt III

Thomas L. Merritt III, a devoted man of faith and steadfast believer, passed away leaving a legacy defined by his unwavering trust in God and his love for family and others. He lived boldly for Christ and inspired all who knew him through his perseverance, kindness, and devotion to God’s promises.

Thomas was a devoted family man, known for his kind heart and willingness to help others. His life reflected a deep commitment to serving those around him, both personally and spiritually.

Born in Durham County, Thomas was the son of the late Thomas A. Merritt and Mildred Weaver Merritt. He is survived by his loving wife, Lola Staley Merritt of Chapel Hill; his stepson, Michael Taylor; his son, Thomas Merritt IV, and daughter-in-law, Tiffany; and his two beloved grandchildren, London and Chloe, of Atlanta, Georgia.

He is also survived by his brother, Erwin Merritt (Wandolyn) of Durham; his sister, Dorthea Farrington of Chapel Hill; as well as three nieces Carmella, Lydia and Morrai along with two nephews Adrien and Coreian.

During his career, Thomas owned and operated a commercial trucking company. Following his retirement, he devoted much of his time to Bible study, hosting studies in his home, and ministering to both groups and individuals. His faith was not only professed but lived daily through service, encouragement, and prayer.

Thomas L. Merritt III will be remembered as a man defined by faith, perseverance, and unwavering devotion to God. His legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched and the family he loved deeply.
