Mahala Demetria Scurlock was born on October 26, 2002, to the late Fletcher Scurlock and Synthia Scurlock. On August 3, 2026, Mahala’s earthly journey came to an unexpected end, leaving behind memories that will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Mahala was educated in the Alamance County school system and graduated from Eastern Alamance High School. With hopes and dreams for her future, she continued her education at Alamance Community College and aspired to one day become a veterinarian.
Mahala found joy in drawing, coloring, and making bracelets. She also had a heart for helping others and enjoyed volunteering at elementary schools during her free time. Her willingness to give of herself, especially to children, spoke to the kindness that was such a meaningful part of who she was.
Mahala's life was not without hardship. She experienced the tremendous loss of both of her parents at an early age and faced health challenges that could have easily caused her to lose hope. Yet, through it all, Mahala refused to allow the difficult chapters of her life to define her entire story.
Mahala was a member of Harvest Word Ministry in Zebulon, North Carolina, where she remained a member until her passing.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher and Synthia Scurlock; her paternal grandparents, William Scurlock and Lozelle Alston Scurlock; her maternal grandfather, Willard Henry Swann Jr.; and her aunt and uncle, Tracey and Kenneth Swann, who lovingly stepped in to raise and care for her following the passing of her parents.
Mahala leaves to cherish her precious memory her three sisters, Hannah Scurlock, Elizabeth Swann, and Keisha Leath; grandparents, Mary and Michael Raynor; uncle, Joseph Scurlock; aunt, Marcella Jones-Scurlock; and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
Though Mahala's life was cut short, the love she gave, the dreams she carried, and the memories she created will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her. Her journey ended much sooner than anyone could have imagined, but her life and her story will never be forgotten.
