Dewey Lyons was born on March 22, 1947, in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
In his early years, his family relocated to Newark, New Jersey, a city that would help shape his character, values, and lifelong commitment to service. He graduated from Southside High School-now known as Shabazz-where the foundations of his leadership and quiet strength first took root.
After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, Dewey returned home with a renewed sense of purpose. He continued his education at Rutgers University and, upon graduation, began what would become a remarkable 31½-year career with Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G). Throughout his tenure, Dewey held numerous staff and line management positions, earning the respect of colleagues and peers alike for his integrity, wisdom, and steady leadership. His commitment to excellence led him to earn a Master's Degree in Business Administration from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Dewey's influence extended far beyond his workplace. He served on various national committees of the American Gas Association and the Edison Electric Institute, lending his voice and expertise to shape the industry he loved. In his hometown of Plainfield, New Jersey, Dewey also served as a Commissioner, always guided by a deep desire to give back and uplift his community. Over the years, his contributions were recognized through numerous awards and honors. Notably, he was a charter member of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy and served as its President from 2001 to 2003—another testament to his legacy of leadership and advocacy.
Dewey was a member of the Masonic brotherhood, holding a Certificate of Membership with The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons. He attained the rank of Master Mason in March of 1974 through his affiliation with St. John's Lodge #43 in East Orange, New Jersey.
In retirement, Dewey embraced life with joy and intention. He and his beloved wife, Deborah, made their primary home in Plainfield, while also sharing a cherished "snowbird" residence in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. There, Dewey found happiness under sunny skies, spending countless hours on the golf course and creating lasting memories while entertaining friends and family who came to visit. These moments-filled with laughter, love, and fellowship-were among his greatest treasures.
Dewey leaves behind a family who adored him and will forever carry his spirit forward. He is survived by his loving wife, Deborah; his two daughters, Brett (affectionately known as "Adaya") and Michelle ("Shelly"); and his four treasured grandchildren, Micaiah, Nahshon, Anani, and Zuriel, who were the light of his life. He is also survived by three of his five siblings-Ronald, Anthony, and Wayne. Dewey was preceded in death by his beloved parents, the late Alice Telia Lyons and Bishop A.D. Lyons; his older sister, Katherine "Bill" Massey; and his younger brother, Thomas Lyons.
With great pride and affection, Dewey also embraced his two sons-in-law, Nias Battle and Joshua Gregory, whom he loved deeply and spoke of often. His nieces-lovingly known as "The Queens" —included, alongside Brett and Shelly, Kawana, Sherita, and Shanique. Together, they proudly carry the title of his Lyon Queens.
Dewey was part of a vast and loving family of cousins, nieces, and nephews, sister and brother in laws, aunts and uncles - all of whom will continue to honor his legacy for generations to come.
Dewey Lyons lived a life marked by service, strength, humility, and unwavering love for his family and community. His presence was steady, his counsel wise, and his heart generous. Though he has transitioned from this life, his legacy remains—etched in the lives he touched and the love he gave so freely.
