“It is well with my soul, I am free and made whole. I thank God, yes, it is well with my soul. I am at peace now ~resting in the arms of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ ~since departing this world Monday afternoon, October 13, 2025.”
Clyde Douglas Perry made his way into the world on March 21, 1943 in Chatham County, NC. He was the third child born to the union of the late Robert Lee Perry and Susie Burnett Perry. He attended the public schools of Orange County, graduating from Lincoln High School’s class of 1961. In 1960, prior to graduation, Clyde and eight other men from Lincoln High School participated in Chapel Hill’s first sit-in at Colonial Drug Store. These young men later became recognized as The Chapel Hill Nine. This courageous step sparked a decade of direct-action civil rights demonstrations in Chapel Hill.
In 1962, after graduation, Clyde enlisted in the United States Air Force as an Airman. Before being discharged in 1966, he was awarded a National Defense Service Medal. Clyde believed in furthering his education and enrolled in Durham Technical Community College. In the mid 1970’s he earned an Associate’s Degree in Business and Administration. In 1977 Clyde married the former Donnis Jeffries, and from this union two daughters were born. Soon after, he began his career in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School System as a Purchasing Manager at Lincoln Center. Clyde devoted nearly 30 years of service to Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools, retiring in 2003.
After retirement, Clyde stayed active and involved in his community. He was an avid card player, and enjoyed shooting pool and bowling. He gained a new found love of traveling to different schools and community centers to share his experience as one of the members of The Chapel Hill Nine. Clyde accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He became a committed and active member of First Baptist Church. His service to the Lord manifested through his talents shared with the Male Ministry.
Clyde never met a stranger and his infectious laugh could be heard throughout any room. Above all he loved his family and friends and supported them in any way he could. His legacy of love will be cherished in the memories of Clyde Douglas “Doug” Perry.
